The art of…

AcroDance

AcroDance is the fusion of the artistic motion of dance and the athleticism of acrobatics. It is not the same as gymnastics. An AcroDancer must complete all skills on a hard stage without the advantage of a sprung floor, while seamlessly integrating musicality, emotional expression, extension, control and line. A sprung floor allows a gymnast to complete much more difficult tumbling when compared to what is recommended in AcroDance. Skills taught in AcroDance might look the same as gymnastics, but they are taught differently to compensate for the conditions. Neither the ‘AcroDance’ way or ‘Gymnastics’ way are wrong, but they are different.
The acrobatic Arts program is designed to teach a complete understanding of AcroDance and is based on five elements:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Flexibility
  • Limbering
  • Tumbling
The training program includes drills to build strength, flexibility and improve cardio as well as teaching key skills such as handstands, splits and bridges. The program is designed to complement your child's current dance classes, and it is recommended that dancers also participate in ballet and/or modern classes when taking acro.
